Single skin fuel tanks are those tanks that do not have an inner chamber storage as you would find in a bunded tank. This means that the entire inside volume of a single skin fuel tank is the same as the volume of fuel that can be stored in it. Heating oil tanks for domestic use are typically available in bunded or single skin options.

Bunded fuel tanks are a legal requirement where fuel is being stored above a certain capacity and in specific locations in order to provide additional protection against spillage. However, if you do not require a bunded tank then a single skin tank may offer the most cost effective solution.

Do I Need A Single Skin or Bunded Fuel Tank?

A bunded tank is one which holds its contents in an inner chamber within the tank itself. Single skin tanks have no such feature. Bunded tanks are a legal requirement in some instances, but for many applications, they are not necessary.

There are specific criteria in the UK regarding whether or not a single skin tank can be legally installed. Tanks with capacities in excess of 2500 litres or those which are to be installed near a controlled water source must be bunded tanks. This means specifically if the tank will be located within 10 metres of controlled water, within 50 metres of a well or spring, positioned on a hard surface where spillage runoff could reach controlled water, a manhole or a drain. Fuel stored within an Environment Agency ground source protection zone must also always be bunded.
