Plastic fireproof heating oil tanks are designed to resist fire and heat damage by forming a protective barrier around the fuel. They are made from a high-density polyethylene, which is a durable and chemical-resistant material that is designed to stand up to intense heat and flames.

Polyethylene is rendered fireproof by chemicals such as aluminium oxide and phosphorus. If the fireproof tank is engulfed by flames, the chemicals absorb the fire's heat. The process prevents the plastic from melting or setting on fire for a maximum of thirty to sixty minutes; a valuable time delay that can enable firefighters to reach the scene and tackle the blaze before the stored fuel has the chance to ignite.

Like steel fireproof oil tanks, plastic fireproof heating oil tanks are designed to resist corrosion, which can weaken the tank and cause leaks. These tanks also feature an internal baffle system designed to reduce the risk of fuel oil spills in the event of a fire, and many are equipped with built-in safety features, such as pressure relief valves, to prevent overpressure in the tank.

Fire rated heating oil tanks can usually be positioned closer to building and boundaries, or within certain types of outbuildings in residential settings. This makes them a versatile choice, and a legal requirement if you want to position your tank in an applicable area.

Polyethylene fireproof oil tanks have a bunded construction with an inner tank encased by an external container. The tanks include fill points that are large enough to provide easy access, and overfill valves to prevent unwanted oil spillages occurring whenever the tank is replenished. 

Lids can also be safely locked. Bottom outlet kits contain valves to minimise oil leakage when fuel is being dispensed. Checking how much fuel remains in the tank can usually be carried out through a manual float level gauge. An alternative is an ultrasonic gauge that activates an alarm system when fuel is at a low level.
