Selecting A Suitable Tank For Heating Oil

Single skin oil tanks, with one layer of steel or plastic, are a cost effective option but are subject to strict regulations due to the increased risk of spills and pollution.

Bunded heating oil tanks offer a number of benefits and are manufactured with an inner and an outer vessel which provides two layers in various forms for added safety. Regulations stipulate that the bund (outer tank) must be able to hold at least 110% of the capacity of the inner tank. Any tank that has a capacity greater than 3,500 litres must be bunded.

Fire rated oil tanks are lined with a fire-retardant material, and offer 30 or 60 minutes protection from fire so that the area can be safely evacuated and the blaze controlled and extinguished. Such tanks have advantages including that they can be installed in areas in which other tanks would be prohibited.

Choosing The Right Size Heating Oil Tank

Selecting the optimally sized heating oil tank depends on a range of factors. The two most important will usually be the space available for it to fit into and the amount of heating oil you’ll use in a given period - for example between your regular deliveries.

As a general guide, these standard heating oil tank sizes will suit the following common applications:

650 to 1,000 litres - 1 or 2 bedroom houses or commercial premises with occasional use
1,000 litres to 1,500 litres - 2 or 3 bedroom houses or small commercial premises
