Bunded Oil Tanks
If you use heating oil on your property, a high quality heating oil tank is essential. Whether you’re looking for a replacement heating oil tank or need a new tank for a first time installation, here at Northern Tank Store we have one of the widest ranges of heating oil tanks for sale available in the UK. With tanks from leading brands, as well as our own manufacturing facility, you can find bunded heating oil tanks in a comprehensive range of capacities to meet any requirement.
What Kind Of Heating Oil Tank Do I Need?
The type of tank that is best suited to your requirements depends on a number of factors, including where the tank will be installed and the size of the property, and there are a few things to know about heating oil tanks to help you make the right choice.
The most common type of tanks for domestic use are bunded oil tanks, which means fuel is stored in an inner chamber while an outer casing acts as a failsafe in case of leakage. Bunded oil tanks offer a number of benefits over single skin tanks, and are often the preferred choice for homeowners as they deliver enhanced safety and peace of mind, as well as being a legal requirement in some situations.
Heating oil tanks are typically available in steel or plastic. Steel heating oil tanks offer additional security against theft, however they can require additional maintenance and upkeep, and can be more difficult to install due to their extra weight. Plastic heating oil tanks are lighter and easier to install, and are not prone to rust which makes them virtually maintenance free. They can be easier to puncture, however this risk can be mitigated with the double layer construction of a bunded tank.
Heating oil tanks can be used to store various types of oil for central heating systems, however it is not recommended to mix the type of oil stored in your tank. Where residential properties are concerned, kerosene is the most commonly used heating oil, which all our tanks are designed to safely and securely store.
Heating Oil Tank Sizes
Heating oil tanks are available in a wide range of sizes, and here at Northern Tank Store you can find tanks with capacities ranging from 350 litres up to 10,000 litres or more. The size of tank that you need will depend on the size of your property and how much fuel you typically use, as well as the space available on site and the frequency with which you want to refill your tank.
There isn’t a one size fits all solution when it comes to heating all tanks, however as a general rule of thumb a typical 2-3 bedroom house would require a tank with a capacity between 1000 and 1500 litres, a 3-4 bedroom home between 1650 and 2500 litres, and for properties with 4+ bedrooms a tank over 2500 litres is recommended.
Heating Oil Tank Regulations, Safety & Legal Requirements
The environmentally hazardous and flammable fuel typically stored in heating oil tanks obviously make safety and security a top priority. Heating oil tanks need to prevent leakage and be able to survive in all weather conditions. Designed for secure heating oil storage over a lengthy period of time, well designed tanks prioritise durability to minimise any risk of leaking or spillage. Because they store potential pollutants, heating oil tanks must comply with certain European and UK government regulations. At Northern Tank Store, we ensure that these are all met by every product we supply.
When it comes to installation there are a number of regulations that you will need to consider. It’s necessary to install your heating oil tank on a level, fire resistant base such as one made from stone or concrete. For some sites a bunded tank is legally required. This includes if the tank will be installed within 10 metres of controlled water or within 50 metres of a controlled well or spring. A bunded tank will also be required if it is to be positioned on hard ground that could lead to runoff into controlled water should a leak occur.
It is also a legal requirement that heating oil tanks are CE marked. CE marking represents a guarantee that strict ISO regulations have been followed by the manufacturer. All fuel tanks supplied by Northern Tank Store are CE marked, ensuring that they adhere to the ISO 9001:2015 quality standard. This means they are thoroughly inspected for defects and pass all the relevant pneumatic pressure tests.
If you’re unsure about the type of tank you need for your site, contact our team who will be happy to assist you. You can also find answers to common questions about heating oil tanks and correct installation on our Heating Oil Tank FAQ page.
