Drip Trays

Drip trays sit beneath fuel tanks, machinery, IBC containers, or any equipment that stores or transfers liquid, catching leaks and spills before they reach the ground. In many commercial and agricultural settings, using a drip tray isn't optional: the Environment Agency requires secondary containment for oil and fuel storage above certain thresholds. Even for smaller domestic setups, a tray protects concrete, soil, and drainage systems from contamination.

The tray needs enough capacity to contain at least 110% of the volume of the largest single container stored on it, which is the standard secondary containment rule under UK environmental regulations. Measure the footprint of your tank and check the tray's stated sump capacity before buying. If you're storing multiple containers together, the 110% rule applies to the largest single vessel, not the combined total.

A drip tray is a shallow, open-topped platform designed to catch incidental drips and minor leaks, while a bunded pallet has deeper, reinforced walls and is built specifically to hold IBC containers or multiple drums, offering a higher liquid retention volume. If you're storing IBCs or several 205-litre drums, a bunded pallet is the more appropriate choice; a standard drip tray suits smaller equipment, machinery, or individual containers.

Yes, provided you choose one rated for outdoor use. Look for UV-stabilised polyethylene or galvanised steel construction, as standard plastic degrades quickly in direct sunlight. Rainwater accumulation can reduce the effective containment capacity, so some outdoor drip trays include a lockable drain valve to discharge rainwater in a controlled way without losing spill containment.

The three most common materials are polyethylene (PE), steel, and galvanised steel. PE trays are lightweight, chemically resistant, and suit most oils, fuels, and water-based liquids. Steel trays handle heavier loads and are better for workshops where vehicles or forklifts may drive over them. Always check the chemical compatibility of the tray before using it with solvents, AdBlue, or concentrated chemicals.

For domestic heating oil tanks, Building Regulations Part J and OFTEC standards strongly recommend secondary containment, and many installers fit drip trays or bunded tanks as standard. For agricultural and commercial sites, the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001 (England) and equivalent devolved regulations make secondary containment a legal requirement for tanks above 200 litres. Remove any accumulated liquid promptly; stored fuel or oil counts as hazardous waste and must be disposed of through a licensed waste carrier, not poured down a drain. Wipe the tray down with an appropriate absorbent material, then rinse with a suitable cleaner. Inspect regularly for cracks, warping, or drain valve wear, particularly after frost, as temperature cycling can stress plastic trays over time.

AdBlue is corrosive to certain metals, including carbon steel and copper alloys, so a PE or stainless steel tray is the correct choice.
