Diesel Flow Meters & Gauges
Monitoring how much diesel is passing into and out of a tank or other storage vessel is crucial to many fuel transfer and vehicle refuelling processes. At Northern Tank Store we offer a comprehensive selection of diesel flow meters and tank gauges. With brands like Piusi that are trusted by industry for their accuracy, our range includes options designed to suit any application and meet all international engineering standards.
What is a Diesel Flow Meter?
Flow meters measure and record the rate, pressure or discharge of liquids and are used by a wide range of businesses to track fuel being dispensed. Diesel flow meters measure the quantity of fuel being transferred from one place to another.
They are used in a variety of applications, for example when measuring volume passed from a tank to a vehicle or to a generator. They are often installed along with diesel transfer pumps, and some models are also compatible with diesel management systems for remote monitoring.
Flow meters usually have a numerical or graphical display to enable monitoring of the volume of liquid being moved. Alternatively, pulse meters send an electronic signal - a ‘pulse’ - to a location elsewhere. Flow meters often have two readings - one for the current amount being distributed and another to indicate how much has been read during its lifetime.
Types of Diesel Flow Meters
Different types of diesel flow meters work in different ways. They also have different flow rate values at which they will operate accurately. In order to accurately measure the fluid being distributed, the liquid must be moving within the stated flow rate range of the meter.
A turbine flow meter has a propeller that turns on an axis. The mechanical action of fluid moving across it is converted into a flow rate figure. Turbine flow meters are very accurate and used to monitor liquids in a range of industries including chemical, fuel and water sites.
A nutating disc flow meter has a disc that nutates (rocks on a spindle) as liquid passes over it. Each wobble of the disc is measured to determine the volume of liquid that has passed over it. Nutating disc flow meters are cost-effective, durable and are suited to many industrial processes.
An oval gear flow meter has a geared rotor that rotates within a housing. Flow rate is measured by passing known volumes of the fluid through the unit. Oval gear flow meters are widely used in many industrial applications and have high measurement accuracy.
Choosing a Diesel Tank Gauge
Before, during and after all that movement it’s useful to know how much volume or mass of a product is in the container - hence the need for precision tank gauges.
Fuel tank gauges give a visual display of the contents of a tank. There are different types of gauges that are used for different purposes. Commonly, gauges are used to monitor how much is in a tank and notify operators that the contents are running low.
The basics of understanding which diesel tank gauge to choose largely relate to gauging technologies. Sight and float type tank gauges are relatively inexpensive and easy to use but are not as accurate as hydrostatic and ultrasonic gauges.
