Septic Tanks & Water Treatment
Water treatment tanks process waste water into a significantly cleaner effluent that can be discharged directly into a soakaway or used for a range of other applications. The range of onsite water treatment solutions available at Northern Tank Store represent some of the most advanced technology in our inventory, and are the perfect solution for handling waste water without a mains connection.
Many people think that a septic tank is simply a tank for storing wastewater and sewage. However, it is more accurate to say that a septic tank is designed to store sewage for extended periods of time, within which it is allowed to decompose, making disposal easier when the tank is eventually drained. At Northern Tank Store we stock septic tanks from top manufacturers, suitable for a broad range of applications.
Sophisticated Water Treatment Solutions
At Northern Tank Store we’re pleased to offer a range of innovative water treatment solutions including water treatment tanks to meet a variety of capacity requirements. Our range includes the Harlequin HydroClear system which uses MBBR technology (moving bed biological reactor) meaning they are self cleaning and will not become blocked like other systems can. These tanks offer great performance, including near inaudible operation, hermetic sealing for zero odour, and convenient installation.
The range of water treatment solutions we provide means that waste water from private or commercial residences or facilities can be treated on-site, with 96.6% of pollutants being removed. Water can then be reused for applications such as cleaning or irrigation, or disposed of.
Where access to mains sewerage is not available, wastewater from toilets, sinks, washing machines, baths and showers can also be routed through the drainage system directly into a septic tank. Solid matter falls to the bottom where it decomposes into a sludge which is later removed. Lighter solids, oil and grease float to the top to form a ‘scum’ layer. The remaining liquid is drained into a soakaway system.
Septic Tanks & Water Treatment From Northern Tank Store
At Northern Tank Store we offer some of the best waste treatment systems on the market that offer fantastic performance for off mains supply locations. We also supply a full range of water storage tanks including potable water tanks that are approved for drinking water. What is the difference between a septic tank and a sewage treatment plant?
A septic tank separates solids from wastewater and partially breaks them down, but it does not fully treat the effluent. A sewage treatment plant (also called a package treatment plant) actively treats the wastewater using aeration to produce cleaner, environmentally safe effluent suitable for direct discharge into watercourses.
Do I need a permit to install a septic tank?
It depends on the discharge method. Septic tanks discharging into a watercourse are now heavily restricted. Most new installations require a sewage treatment plant to meet UK Building Regulations and Environment Agency rules. Always check local and national guidelines.
Can I still install a traditional septic tank?
Yes, but only if the discharge is to a drainage field or soakaway system that meets regulatory requirements. Discharging into a stream, ditch, or river from a septic tank is no longer permitted under current legislation.
How do I know which tank size I need?
Sizing depends on the number of people (or population equivalent) using the system. A standard 3-bedroom home typically needs a tank designed for 5 people (PE5). Always follow manufacturer sizing guidance and regulatory minimums.
How often do septic tanks need to be emptied?
Most septic tanks should be emptied (desludged) annually to prevent solids from building up and causing blockages or system failure. The frequency may vary based on usage.
What maintenance is required for a sewage treatment plant?
Regular servicing (typically annually) is required to keep treatment plants operating efficiently. This includes inspecting air compressors, checking sludge levels, cleaning diffusers, and testing electrical components.
Are your tanks compliant with UK regulations?
Yes. Our septic and treatment tanks comply with UK Building Regulations, BS EN 12566, and Environment Agency guidelines. Many of our treatment systems are CE-marked or UKCA-approved for peace of mind.
Can these tanks be installed below ground?
Yes. Most septic tanks and treatment units are designed for below-ground installation. They feature robust, weather-resistant materials and manhole access for servicing and desludging.
Do I need power for a sewage treatment plant?
Yes. Most sewage treatment plants require mains electricity to power the air compressor or pump system used to aerate and treat the wastewater.
Can I use a septic tank for commercial or holiday let properties?
For commercial use or sites with variable occupancy, a treatment plant is usually more appropriate due to stricter discharge standards. Proper sizing and system selection are critical.
What’s the delivery time for septic tanks and treatment systems?
Standard in-stock models are typically delivered within 5–10 working days. Larger or made-to-order systems may have longer lead times depending on manufacturer availability.
